What a Functional Medicine Practitioner and Nutritional Therapist Really Does (It's Not Just About Food)

I’m Not Just a Nutritionist: Here’s What I Actually Do
Why personalised, root-cause healing goes far beyond food...
“So, do you just tell people what to eat?”
If I had a pound for every time someone asked me that, I’d be sipping green juice on a yacht by now...
As a Registered Nutritional Therapist, Nutrigenomics Specialist, and Functional Medicine Practitioner, people often assume I spend my days telling clients to “eat more kale” or handing out generic food plans. And while nutrition is central to what I do, it’s just the starting point.
In this post, I want to show you what I really do to help my clients transform their health — especially when they’ve tried everything and still don’t feel well.
What people think I do:
- Give meal plans
- Recommend supplements
- Talk about sugar, gluten, and greens
- Help people lose weight
- Focus only on food
These are all valid tools — but on their own, they don’t create long-lasting change. Why?
Because they don’t explain why someone’s body is out of balance in the first place.
What I actually do:
Here’s a deeper look into the work I do behind the scenes:
1. I Investigate the Root Cause
If you’re experiencing chronic symptoms — fatigue, skin issues, gut problems, hormonal imbalance, mood swings, etc — I don’t just address the surface. I ask:
- What’s the real reason your system is out of sync?
- Is your gut lining inflamed?
- Are your hormones being poorly detoxified?
- Are your genes affecting how you metabolise histamine or oestrogen?
Functional medicine means asking better questions to get better outcomes.
2. I Analyse Your Genes (Yes, Really!)
As a certified Nutrigenomics Specialist, I use DNA testing to understand how your unique genetic blueprint influences:
- Nutrient needs (e.g., do you absorb B12 properly?)
- Detox pathways (is your liver overwhelmed?)
- Hormone metabolism (can your body break down oestrogen efficiently?)
- Stress & sleep response (is anxiety partially genetic?)
This allows me to create truly personalised nutrition and lifestyle plans — no guesswork.
3. I Use Functional Lab Testing
Tired of being told your blood tests are “normal” while you still feel off?
I use advanced lab testing to look deeper. Think:
- Stool tests to assess your microbiome
- Hormone panels to understand cortisol, oestrogen, and progesterone fluctuations
- Blood tests for nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, thyroid function, and more
When I see data, I get answers — and answers lead to targeted, effective support.
4. I Support Your Whole System
I don’t just chase symptoms. I support:
- Your gut (because all health begins here)
- Your liver (detox is crucial for hormonal balance)
- Your nervous system (stress blocks healing)
- Your immune function (especially if autoimmunity or allergies are involved)
By addressing the entire ecosystem, we allow your body to naturally shift into healing mode.
5. I Coach You with Compassion
Healing takes time — and consistency. That’s why my role is not just to give information, but to offer:
- Gentle accountability
- Emotional support
- Clarity in the chaos of conflicting health advice
I walk beside you, not ahead of you. You’ll never be just another client or protocol.
What Makes My Approach Different?
- Root-cause focus – I ask why, not just what
- Genetic & functional insights – no more guessing
- Education + empowerment – I teach you to understand your body
- Personalisation – no one-size-fits-all advice
- Mind-body connection – because emotions matter, too
Are You Ready to Find Out What’s Really Going On?
If you’re:
- Frustrated by chronic symptoms that no one can explain
- Exhausted by conflicting diet advice
- Tired of quick fixes that don’t work
- Ready to feel good in your body again...
…then it might be time to go deeper.
Let’s uncover what’s been holding you back — and start creating a plan tailored to you.
